Marineford Arc is the best Arc in One Piece where we get to see fight between Marine and Pirate and there are many events happening during that arc and one of them is the fight between Shanks and Kaidou before Shanks went to Marineford.
We all know that Kaido wanted to kill whitebeard during the marineford war. This was probably that greatest war Kaidou wanted that will increase his opportunity to be killed
in this war. As we know, Kaidou have suicide tendencies which he think that the world is boring and he just wanted to die. However, Shanks somehow stopped him.
There are 3 possibilites that might happen.
1. Shanks defeated Kaidou
2. Shanks fought Kaidou and Kaidou just give up because it was pointless to fight
3. Shanks gave Kaido some kind of Knowledge, Kaidou take it and left
Lets dive into all of these possibilities
Kaidou and Shanks are both Yonkou. It means that they strength are comparable to each other. Some may stronger than the other but there isnt too big of a difference. So, defeating a Yonkou is not an easy task and Kaidou is considered as the Strongest Creature in The World. So it is not possible that Shanks defeated Kaidou quickly and easily. He came to Marineford without any damage.
In a fight between Yonkou, I think Nobody wanted to give up easily. It will tarnished their reputation. Remember that, Shanks and his crew arrived at Marineford without any damage. Even after the Marineford, Kaidou are still remembering how Whitebeard is dead and he is not. This is because, he really wanted to die and Marineford is the perfect place. Therefore, there is no possibility that he wanted to give up the fight versus Shanks.
3. Shanks given up some Information
This theory makes more sense than the other two. Shanks may have given Kaidou some information regarding something and Kaidou totally accepted it and left. Now what kind information Shanks gave to Kaidou
Inuarashi told us that Kaido and Big Mom both have Road Poneglyph and I think that Shanks actually told Kaido where this Poneglyph or gave one to Him. I think this would be enough reason for Kaido to give up from going to Marineford. I know this is Crazy but I think this is the only thing that would stop Kaido from fighting
Kaidou might have no interest in becoming a Pirate King but we thought Big Mom doesnt have interest to becoming a Pirate King but it turns out that Big Mom too have ambition to become one.
Shanks may have know some of the Location of the Poneglyph. Shanks is the only Yonkou who are not concerned with the race of becoming the pirate King. He may know or have a Poneglyph on his own and didnt mind giving it up to the right person
About the Poneglyph, there is only certain people that have been able to read the poneglyph. Big Mom have the Poneglyph and pudding as the translator. Pudding told that Mama only favours her because of her abilities to read Poneglyph.
However, Kaidou didnt have anyone able to read the ponegyph that is why he went to Wano since he knew the history of Kozuki family, the creator of Poneglyph.
Shanks stopped kaidou to give him the Road Poneglyph and after that Kaidou attacked Wano to find someone who will translate the Poneglyph.
