Hey everyone! Today, I want to talk about Luffy’s mother. You all probably know that Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of the show One Piece. His journey began from Fooshia Village, where he was under the care of Curly Dadan, until one day he left on his journey. Luffy was under the care of his grandfather before he was left under Dadan’s care.
We didn’t know about any of his parents until Garp Introduced Monkey D. Dragon as Luffy’s father. Dragon is one of the strongest people in the entire One Piece series. He hasn’t met Luffy since he’s grown up, and he has devoted his entire life to the cause of the Revolutionary Army. According to Dragon, the day when he meets his son will come soon enough. However, we don’t know anything about Luffy’s mother yet. She has never been talked about up until now, and we don’t even have clues from within the story.
However, Oda himself has talked about Luffy’s mother a couple of times before. Here’s Oda speaking about Luffy’s mom in an interview:
“D: What is Luffy’s mother like? Was she beautiful? What happened to her? Did she die when Luffy was a baby?
O: I think she’s alive. I’m still thinking hard about this. [Laughs] But if she does appear in the story, then she’ll be a very tough-looking woman. And strict. There’s no way that she’s a beautiful mother. She’s got this typical middle-aged woman’s permed hair. Speaking about families, I did a backstory for Nico Robin and her family. That was actually the first time for me to draw a mother in a character’s memory. Up until that point, I’d never drawn a blood relation. In Chopper’s case, he’s called a son even though he’s not blood-related. So I’ve put in a message there saying that you can still call someone who’s not related by blood your family.”
This isn’t all we have about her. In SBS volume 44, we had this question about Luffy’s parents.
“D: Oda!! I have a serious question. Won’t you draw Luffy’s parents?
-Mr. Uni – 16 Years Old
O: His parents… they’ve already been drawn. They’ll appear in the next volume. Look forward to it ~”
So, apparently, Oda has already drawn Luffy’s mother. We just don’t know who she is. I’m really interested to know who she is, and what her story is. Recently, Oda also talked about how he wanted to show the day Luffy was born, and how it s a very significant day in the world of One Piece. Hopefully, these questions will be answered after Whole Cake Island, when he get to Reverie, and Dragon meets Luffy.
